Very cool house at 63 Seaton

Meredith, Shellie and I love this little house in Toronto. It's very slim on the front and then expands in the back alley. It's such a smart use of marginal urban space. There are many such examples in Toronto - buildings designed by architects like Shim-Sutcliffe, Kohn Shnier and Stephen Teeple, for example.

These photos aren't particularly great, but they're what I was able to take today in a hurry in the blazing sunlight.

First photos taken with new (cheap) HP digital camera

I bought this camera back in early May (or thereabouts) and have taken hundreds of photographs with it. It's not great, but it's way better than the Nikon that we were using, especially viz. ease of use, red eye and that sort of thing. This is Meredith getting ready for her first bike ride of the year and Shellie making a call off the second floor deck.

Mark & Laura's house under construction (Guelph, July 2007)

Steen's Dairy in Erin, Ontario

Steen's Dairy is a gem. They make what may be the best milkshakes in Ontario. And Erin, Ontario is what every small town in Ontario WANTS to be. Erin really pulls it off, though. It's very attractive and appealing. I haven't stopped there in about 20 years and it's as compelling today as it was back then.

Shellie, Meredith and I stopped at Steen's on our way back to from the lodge. Naturally we had a milkshake, as well as delicious sandwiches and a burger from their lunch counter.

This Bruce believes...

My colleague and friend Bruce Mau was recently on CBC Radio where he read an essay, "Science plus Art to Change the World," in response to the series challenge, "This I Believe". The show was a classic from American public radio, recently revived by NPR and now CBC in Canada. Bruce's essay is a powerful crystalization of his thoughts on humanism, optimism and design.

The essay begins (but read the whole thing, or listen to it on-line):

"I believe in science and art and the practice of design that brings them together to change the world.

"I have three wildly inventive young daughters and they have opened my eyes to my believe in the mystery and power of creative invention. They remind me on a daily basis of my belief in the scientific method, of questioning our experience and my belief in the vast unknown. My work as a designer demands the intersection of these two great cultures of our time: science and the arts. In our society they mostly live separate lives, developing separate world views, distinct methods and segregated communities of thought and practice. The more I work as a designer, a practice that demands the constant negotiation of the boundaries and intersections of these two worlds, the more deeply committed I am to the foundation of science..."

These ideas are also explored in Bruce Mau's essay in The Walrus.

And awesome talent shows...
